Actually I get what you are saying.
What I think is that the problem is small but the solution to it is very huge (looking from back end perspective)
I know that you have solved the problem that too in a very nice way! But is that worth it to change that much for a single problem which has a small alternative (screenshot) ? Infact I hope your solution gets opted by insta!
But now from UX perspective,
What I think is, Random user is not meant to know the number of people unfollowing the page at any instance in the first place. What we could do is, survey the people (the way you surveyed the previous two questions) by asking the question as in how many cases do they continue following that particular handle. (Cause that’s what happens to me many times, if someone sends me the link to the post, I request the handle and most of the times I unfollow it just after looking at the post.) Now what I think is that this dimension of research (i.e finding out the percentage of people unfollowing the handle) is very critical. I am not saying that it is very important for this answer to be completed, but it’s absence in this solution is bothering me.
If the percentage is less, then no problem.
But if percentage is high, then I guess, it will be very unworthy. (Although it’s easy for insta to implement what you are saying, but it’s not worthy is what I think if the percentage is dominant).
I just kept my view. I am noy saying that your answer isn’t complete. But I had the opportunity to add something to it, I would have gone with one more survey question.
Thanks for you time!
And keep writing such wonderful answers!
