Full Page vs. Side Sheet: UX Design Unboxed
Strategising for Effective Information Conveyance

In interface design, the choice between side sheets and full pages is pivotal for optimising user experience. Here’s how to strategise on selecting the right format to effectively convey information.
Side-sheet over Page
- Quick Access: Opt for side sheets when you need users to view information without leaving the main page, such as displaying task details in a task management app.
- Linear Consumption: Side sheets excel in guiding users through information in a particular order, as eye movement tends to be linear from top to down.
- Limited Actions, Large Tables: Consider side sheets even without user actions, but with large tables to view. However, be mindful of tech limitations regarding the number of rows and columns, and consider the ease of horizontal scrolling based on the user’s device.
Page over Side-sheet
- Complex Comparisons: Choose full pages when users need to compare data across multiple columns, especially if the comparison involves non-adjacent columns. Horizontal scrolling may pose challenges on certain devices, making a full-page view more suitable.
- URL Accessibility: Choose a dedicated task page over a side sheet when tasks need to be shared or accessed via URL, ensuring accessibility and ease of sharing in collaborative environments.
- Information Hierarchy: Follow a hierarchy from small to medium to large information/complex actions: Tooltip > Modal > Side-sheet (covering half-width or 90% of page width) > Full page (same tab or new tab).
- Load Times Consideration: Evaluate if side sheets offer shorter load times compared to full pages, especially when presenting the same information. This can impact user perception of speed and responsiveness.
- Persistence of Information: Check if side sheets can store certain user-entered information for a longer duration or after re-login if needed. While not typically a problem, ensuring data persistence enhances user convenience and continuity of tasks.
